Resumo

Este artigo apresenta brevemente o contexto indígena de São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM) e explica um pouco sobre o artesanato tradicional da região, que é marcado pelo uso de grafismos geométricos, os quais têm teor simbólico e se relacionam ao mundo espiritual indígena. Atualmente o uso de grafismos vem diminuindo, o que é visível nos artesanatos da ASSAI (Associação de Artesãos Indígenas de São Gabriel da Cachoeira), mas o uso de fibras vegetais e outros materiais da natureza local continua presente, sendo um trabalho que contribui para a preservação da floresta. A autora acompanhou os trabalhos na ASSAI e ofereceu uma oficina de design em que ensinou princípios de criação de design e propôs um resgate da memória dos grafismos e outros objetos tradicionais. Observou-se que havia pouca memória da tradição dos grafismos, e muitas artesãs tiveram dificuldade diante da proposta de desenhar novas peças. Conclui-se que seria positivo dar continuidade a esse trabalho junto às artesãs.

Abstract

This article briefly presents the indigenous context of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM) and explains a little about the region’s traditional handicraft, which is marked by the use of geometric graphic artwork, which has a symbolic content and is related to the indigenous spiritual world. Currently, the use of the graphic artwork is decreasing, which is visible in the handicrafts of ASSAI (Association of Indigenous Artisans of São Gabriel da Cachoeira), but the use of plant fibers and other materials from local nature remains present, and it is a work that contributes to the preservation of the forest. The author followed the work at ASSAI and offered a design workshop in which she taught design creation principles and proposed to bring back the memory of the graphic artwork and other traditional objects. It was observed that there was little memory of the graphic artwork tradition and many artisans found it difficult to design new pieces. As a conclusion, we believe that it would be positive to continue this work with the artisans.
