Resumo

Este trabalho teórico-prático sobre design de produto e a fábrica de porcelana da Vista Alegre foca-se em duas linhas de investigação primordiais e complementares: o Funcionalismo e as reflexões sobre o uso, e a Cultura Contemporânea e as reflexões sobre a forma. Por um lado questiona as noções instituídas de Funcionalismo e de ‘estilo internacional’ globalizante propostos pelo Modernismo. Tratam-se de questões pertinentes no âmbito da Vista Alegre pela abundância de ‘serviços completos’ de peças de funções fixas, funcionalmente herméticos no espaço e no tempo. Interessa, pois, desmembrar para propor uma multiplicidade de usos a desempenhar por formas mais abstratas e, assim, abrir as possibilidades de interesse e uso das peças da Vista Alegre. Por outro lado, faz-se uma pesquisa sobre a génese formal das influências da Vista Alegre e da Lisboa cosmopolita de 1500, procurando recuperar simbolismo e significado nos objetos de uso quotidiano. Procura-se um regresso às origens da porcelana e à excelência da produção como expressão vernacular local e autêntica, dado ser uma inspiração anterior ao Modernismo e ao Funcionalismo, com o intuito de contextualizar novas propostas formais no panorama da cultura material cosmopolita contemporânea. Ambas as questões colocadas conduzem a um sistema de valores plural e não monolítico, em sintonia com o pensamento dos estudos culturais contemporâneos.

Abstract

This theoretical and practical work about product design and the porcelain industry Vista Alegre focuses on two lines of primary and complementary research: functionalism and reflections on the use, and the Contemporary Culture and the reflections on form. On the one hand it calls into question the notions of functionalism and the globalizing ‘international style’ proposed by Modernism. These are relevant issues in the study-case of Vista Alegre by the abundance of ‘dinner and tea services’ design for fixed-functions, functionally hermetic in space and time. Now it seems interesting to dismember in order to propose a multitude of uses carried by more abstract forms, and thus to open possibilities of interest and use of porcelain objects from Vista Alegre. On the other hand, it is a research about the formal genesis of the influences of Vista Alegre and the sixteen century cosmopolitan Lisbon of 1500, seeking to recover symbolism and meaning in the everyday objects. We search for a return to the origins of porcelain and excellence of production as a local and authentic vernacular expression, as it is an inspiration previous to Modernism and Functionalism, in order to contextualize new formal proposals in contemporary cosmopolitan material culture. Both questions lead to a system of plural and not monolithic values in line with the thinking of contemporary cultural studies.
