Resumo

Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar uma investigação acerca dos princípios geométricos da arquitetura islâmica, encontrados principalmente em nichos, mihabs e iwans, com especial atenção ao elemento compositivo tridimensional das muqarnas. As muqarnas são alguns dos elementos mais complexos da arquitetura islâmica, também utilizadas em edifícios não islâmicos, como catedrais e palácios do ocidente. Sua complexidade, construção e beleza atraiu o interesse de estudiosos do mundo inteiro.  Dessa forma, esta pesquisa teve por objetivo caracterizar os processos de desenho e construção desses elementos, cujas técnicas de execução ainda não possuem total clareza para os pesquisadores de arquitetura. Isso se fez através da análise de um recorte de exemplos pré-estabelecidos da Arquitetura Seljúcida: o Han do Sultão, em Kayseri, Turquia, e a Grande Mesquita de Isfahan, no Irã. Assim, buscou-se contribuir para as fontes bibliográficas nacionais e internacionais dedicadas a esse assunto, bem como para a compreensão do fazer arquitetura de uma das culturas mais ricas do mundo, a islâmica.

Abstract

This work aims to present an investigation into the geometric principles of Islamic architecture, found mainly in niches, mihabs and iwans, with special attention to the three-dimensional compositional element of muqarnas. Muqarnas are some of the most complex elements of Islamic architecture, also used in non-Islamic buildings, such as cathedrals and palaces in the West. Its complexity, construction and beauty attracted the interest of scholars from all over the world.  Therefore, this research aimed to characterize the design and construction processes of these elements, whose execution techniques are still not completely clear to architectural researchers. This was done through the analysis of a selection of pre-established examples of Seljuq Architecture: the Sultan’s Han, in Kayseri, Turkey, and the Great Mosque of Isfahan, in Iran. Thus, we sought to contribute to national and international projects dedicated to this subject, as well as to understanding the architecture of one of the richest cultures in the world, the Islamic.
